Trafficking Across Continents
Human slavery is sadly far from being a scourge consigned to the history books. In fact, human trafficking has grown to be a global tragedy affecting some 27.5 million people each year. Yet efforts in the global anti-trafficking response have had success by stopping traffickers in their tracks. The Dallas-based Human Trafficking Institute (with whom our speaker worked in Washington, DC) has recognized that in places with little or no enforcement, traffickers operate without consequence. But when traffickers are arrested and charged, their current victims go free and countless other victims are spared. When enforcement goes up, the prevalence of trafficking goes down, making traffickers afraid and empowering victims.
Join the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, in partnership with the NH Chapter of the Fulbright Association, for a timely and important conversation with Emmylou Manwill, the Visiting Clinical Instructor at Boston University School of Law. Attorney Manwill will provide our global audience with key insights into the growth of human trafficking as a borderless crime that illegally moves people around the world -- as well as locally -- for prostitution, forced labor, and migrant smuggling. Learn about successful efforts to track the traffickers and hold them accountable for their crimes, and about the size and scale of the problem. We will hear Attorney Manwill's real-world experience working with the Human Trafficking Institute, representing survivors of trafficking in the U.S., and developing legislation to empower victims of trafficking and to try to put an end to 21st century slavery. This community conversation will connect the global to the local, highlighting the scale of the issue.
Following a moderated Q&A, WACNH invites the in-person and online audience to ask their own questions to gain a clearer understanding of human trafficking across international borders and how bad actors within those systems affect the rule of law.

About the Speaker
Emm
ylou Manwill is a Visiting Clinical Instructor at Boston University School of Law, where she teaches the Human Trafficking Concentration. As a former Student Attorney in the program, she was selected as a Douglass Fellow with the Human Trafficking Institute in Washington D.C., where she drafted an initial site assessment review of South Africa for potential program expansion and helped with research and case analysis for its annual Federal Human Trafficking Report.
Manwill earned her J.D. from Boston University School of Law in May 2020, where she graduated with honors as an Edward F. Hennessey Distinguished Scholar and served as Article Editor of the International Law Journal. She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
