White Collar Crimes of Power & Profit
Chaos, especially economic turbulence is an opportunity for transnational crime to gain a foothold. In the aftermath of the 2008 Great Recession, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the backsliding of democracy in Ecuador, malign actors like the Russian oligarchs and the Colombian drug cartels find openings for power and profit.
The definition of "white collar crime" covers generally non-violent, financially-motivated illegal acts committed by business or government professionals, including bribery, extortion and other deceptive practices, typically carried out for personal or corporate financial gain.
Social and economic upheaval often provide the foundation for such unfair competitive practices that fall outside the norms for legal and ethical conduct. For years, the US Department of Justice, pursued international white collar criminals through enforcement of the 1977 Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, money laundering laws, and fraud statutes. But the landscape has changed.
Join the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, in partnership with the NH Chapter of the Fulbright Association, for a timely conversation with former Assistant US Attorney for the District of New Hampshire, Mark S. Zuckerman, on the topic of how international criminal activity, such as trade-based money laundering and dubious crypto transactions, has and continues to interfere with global economic security. In an engaging dialogue with Attorney Zuckerman, who served as White-Collar Crime Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Justice and is also adjunct faculty at UNH Franklin Peirce Law School teaching courses on international white collar crime, we will hear his insider's perspective on the past, present and future of this important factor in global social and economic affairs.

About the Speaker
Mark S. Zuckerman, Esq. is a former federal and state prosecutor. He was an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of New Hampshire for 25 years and a New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General for 13 years. He served as the White-Collar Crime Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Justice, assisting the 93 U.S. Attorney’s Offices across the country with white-collar crime prosecutions. He also served as the Criminal Chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, and as the Acting Criminal Chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Alaska. Attorney Zuckerman is an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce Law School, where he teaches courses in international white-collar crime and piracy and terrorism.
