Join the World Affairs Council next week to learn more about Estonia's first year in the Eurozone.
Called the "Baltic Tiger" and home of Skype, Estonia had the fastest growing economy last year in the troubled European Union and was ranked as the wealthiest of the former Soviet Republics. Recently marking its 20th year of independence, Estonia is described by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as a "shining example for countries around the world yearning for democracy and economic opportunity."

Estonian Ambassador Marina Kaljurand will explain Estonia's success, examine whether its rapid growth can continue, and explore what lies ahead for the European Union.

About Marina Kaljurand

Marina Kaljurand became Ambassador of Estonia to the United States on September 6, 2011.

Previous to this post she served as Undersecretary for Foreign Economic Relations and Development Aid in Estonia (2008-2011), non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan (2007-2011), Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2005-2008), and Ambassador to Israel (2004-2006).

Kaljurand also held the positions of Counselor at the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki, Undersecretary for Legal and Consular Affairs, Director General of Legal Department, Director of International Treaties Division, and 3rd Secretary of the Press and Information Department.

Her professional activities also include serving on government delegations concerning troop withdrawal between Estonian and Russia, and negotiations on land and maritime boundary agreements between the two countries. In addition she was the chief negotiator on accession of Estonia to the OECD, and was head of the legal working group dealing with Estonia's accession to the European Union.

Kaljurand earned a Fulbright scholarship and an M.A. in international law and diplomacy from Tufts University, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (1995); a professional diploma in international relations from the Estonian School of Diplomacy (1992); and an LL.B cum laude from Tartu University (1986). She has also lectured at the Estonian School of Diplomacy on public international Law, international relations, and foreign policy and diplomacy, and taught law at the Tallinn Economic Technical School.

She is fluent in Estonian, English and Russian (her mother tongue). Her hobbies include Nordic walking, reading, dogs, and badminton. She is a member of the Estonian Scottish Terrier Association, and was a national champion in badminton from 1980 to 1991. he was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1962, is married to Kalle Kaljurand, and has a daughter, a son and a Scottish terrier.
