CROSSROADS International Film and Discussion Series Presents:

SALAAM DUNK

Discussion following the film with Catherine Rielly of Rubia and Corri Wilson, Sports Management Lecturer at Southern New Hampshire University

ABOUT THE FILM: Two years ago, most of the women on the basketball team at the American University of Iraq - Sulaimani (AUIS) had never been running before. Many had never played sports. None had ever been on a team with other women. They came from all corners of Iraq to attend this prestigious school, but many cannot tell family back home they go to an "American" university.   Through traditional interviews and private confessional video diaries, Salaam Dunk follows the ethnically diverse AUIS women's basketball team as they discover what it means to be athletes. From the joy of their first win to the pain of losing the coach who started their team, the film gives a glimpse into an Iraq we don't see on the news.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS: Professor Catherine Rielly has taught international community economic development for the past eight years at Southern New Hampshire University’s School of Community Economic Development where she was International Academic Program Chair. A Political Economist, she has conducted research, training, and technical assistance for the past twenty-five years on women’s empowerment, public policy, economics, democratization and governance.  Her research focuses on women’s economic empowerment and fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS through building women’s financial independence. As a Fulbright Scholar in Cameroon, she conducted doctoral research on women’s participation in informal savings and credit organizations and the gender-specific division of labor and income. She received her Ph.D. and Master’s in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; and her B.A in History from Stanford University.  Dr. Rielly has conducted comparative research and written journal articles on policy processes in over twenty countries.

Corri Wilson is a Lecturer in the Sport Management Department at Southern New Hampshire University. She earned her BA in Sociology from Geneseo State University and her MS in Sport Management from Southern New Hampshire University. Her areas of interest include gender issues in sport, youth and community sport, relationship between sport and society, event management, and leadership issues in sport and she is currently developing a course Gender & Sport to be taught on campus this fall. Wilson is the co-founder of the award-winning Fitness Fridays program at Cawley Middle School in Hooksett and was instrumental in the development of a field hockey program at that school. As a graduate student she created an annual sports event for girls held on the campus at Southern New Hampshire University.   Wilson considers herself a Title IX baby, as her athletics career officially began just two years after the passage of this federal legislation. She credits the many women who came before her with giving her the opportunity to participate in sports and believes it is her obligation to do the same for girls today.
